Take Care of Long Hair: Keeping it Healthy, Shiny and Soft

By

Do you have long hair? Is it dry and rough with split ends? Then you aren’t taking good care of it. You need to take care of it from the inside as well as the outside. Your hair will be beautiful only if it is healthy. Here’s how to do it right.

Keep it trimmed.

There is a myth that keeping your hair trimmed will help it grow faster. This isn’t true. Hair growth rate is a matter of time and genetics.

But trimming it will keep it looking nice. Once every six weeks or so will give you a fresh look without a completely new style.

Watch what you eat and drink

If you eat a healthy diet, with the proper balance of proteins, essential oils, and other nutrients, your hair will benefit a great deal. Also keep your hair hydrated by drinking plenty of water on a daily basis.

Be aware of side effects of certain medications which can cause hair loss or changes such as dryness. In certain circumstances your doctor may be able to prescribe shampoos or other medication to combat hair loss.

Avoid damage

Curling irons, straightening irons, blow dryers, perms, bleaches, too much sun, hair dyes and other products can all damage your hair. Be nice to your hair. There is no reason to abuse it in this manner. If you treat your hair good, it will do the same for you.

Over washing is also something to look out for. Washing every day will strip your hair and scalp of the natural oil that keeps your hair soft. Washing every other day is ideal. If that is gross to you, then you will just have to suffer with mediocre hair.

Get rid of shampoos that destroy your hair. Buy some good, natural shampoo and conditioner. Don’t put a bunch of damaging, nasty chemicals in your hair. Good shampoo will cost more money, but you will look fantastic, so it’s worth it. Don’t ask your hairdresser for advice, often she makes a commission on selling products. Research a good shampoo for your hair type on the Internet.

Do an oil treatment once a week.

You don’t need to get fancy with this. You can do it in your bathroom at home. Coat your hair with warm olive oil, wrap it with a towel for a half an hour, and then wash it out. It will take a couple washes to get all the oil out, especially with longer hair.
