Being frugal is about managing your money in a manner that saves you the most in all aspects of your life. Being cheap is basically the same thing, but there is an added negative attribute that goes along with the word: low quality, perhaps to the point of tackiness.

But you can be frugal and save money on everything you buy without the detrimental effect of looking cheap.

It’s possible to save money in all areas of your life, from entertaining, to clothes, to the way you decorate your home, and still have a high standard of living.. With the economy as bad as it is these days, it isn’t a social crime to be frugal. In fact, the ability to be frugal is becoming an acceptable asset, like recycling or green living.

Being frugal while maintaining quality in the things you purchase only requires a few fundamental skills.

One skill is to have a firm grasp on managing your money. Knowing exactly what’s coming in and going out is essential. Set limits on trivial, unnecessary purchases. Every purchase should be planned, but for those who can’t seem to stand not being able to spend on a whim, at least give yourself a predetermined allowance for this kind of spending.

Don’t buy cheap things to save money. You may think you’re saving, but in the end, if the things you buy are low quality and not made well, they won’t last as long, and in the long run you will possibly end up paying more anyway. So always buy the best quality. The secret is to find a way to buy it for less money. You can do this by taking the time and effort to look for sales, discounts online, or even buy used merchandise that’s in good shape.

Get rid of credit cards. Use your debit card, a check, money order, or cash for your purchases, even big ones. You might have to save up the money for a bigger purchase, but if you can save hundreds of dollars, it’s worth it. It’s a good idea to grow your savings to make sure you have the money when a really good bargain comes along.

ha. I have a frugal problem. I sometime buy cheap things. Sometimes, it ends up costing more or wasting more time. Good article with good points.

I agree with the aspects of this article like not buying cheap things. You get what you pay for most of the time.
